1986 was the return of the Convertible for the Corvette, and the last year Corvette bared the Indy 500 Pace Car Decals, until 1998.
1998 marked the return of the Corvette Convertible as well as the return of the Corvette as the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500.  To mark the occasion and to make it well known that the Convertible was back, the 1998 Pace Car replica featured a color scheme that was like no other. It featured an exclusive Radar Blue paint with extensive Indy 500 graphics, yellow wheels, and yellow interior accents.

1998 was the 4th time a Corvette had been the Pace Car, and a total of 11 times a Chevy has been the pace car. With the 1998 Corvette, the 11 Chevy pace cars now include four Corvettes, four Camaros, a Fleetmaster convertible, a Bel Air convertible and a Beretta  convertible.

General Motors only made 1,158 of these Indy 500 Pace Car replicas. The Z4Z pace car option package cost $5,039.

It was all stock, with its 345-horsepower, 5.7 liter LS1 V8 engine and four-speed automatic transmission. A roll bar and strobe lights were the only modifications to the stock Corvette convertible that lead the pack around the Brickyard in 1998.

The Z4Z pace car package also included options, like an upgraded Delco radio with a CD player, a digital clock, an anti-theft system, and Bose speakers. The leather sport seats were adjusted electronically and had memory functions. The base transmission was the four-speed automatic that came with a performance axle ratio. A six-speed manual was an available option.

The Pace Car replica also included Chevy's active-handling package. The system monitors steering inputs and the lateral g-force being exerted and activates any of the four brakes to stabilize the car in emergency maneuvers, and helps control understeering and oversteering.
